Earl's Court: campaigners seek 'stay of execution' for London's landmark exhibition centre

The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea in Central London are well occupied by yet another famous district that is the Earl Court. This is one of the most affluent districts within the capital city featuring the best of entertainment and exhibition venues in London. The area is even surrounded well by plenty of hotels near earls court thus, visitors don’t come across any accommodation hassles.

It is a home to the famous and enticing attraction that is the Earls Court Exhibition Centre. As far as popular concert venues are concerned, this is considered to be the largest indoor and most popular arena for the same. The place is well located within walking distance from the popular High Street Kensington, V&A museums and the Royal Albert Hall. Other than these if we look at the attractions that draws most visitors per year is the Earls Court Exhibition centre.

Earls Court Exhibition Centre:

It is one of the widely known conference, events venue and an exhibition centre within the capital city and features great stylish exterior and interiors. It is known to be a largest venue of all in Central London.

The redevelopment process came into existence of the Earls court exhibition centre that predicts the devastation of this popular exhibition centre. If we talk about the complete Earl’s Court Project it is a 77 acre project which includes:

·         Demolition of the well known Earls Court Exhibition Centre
·         Colonization of the neighborhood with leveling 760 homes
·         Rearrangement of large London underground and its upholding
The deconstruction of the exhibition centre is about to start soon by the first quarter of the next year, however they have decided to start the preliminary work as early as possible.
The deconstruction of the Earls Court will include:
·         Bridge will be dismantled in order to give a formal title of Bridge 19.

This will further connect to the West London rail line that will join the two buildings of the centre which are: art deco Earls Court 1 (EC1) and the new Earls Court 2 (EC2). The venue has now been a heart of the cultural and economic life of London city.

Since years now, Earls Court hosts several exhibitions and shows all throughout the year. Some of the famous shows hosted at the Earl Court includes: Ideal Home Show etc. Every winter both locals and tourists witness Britain’s largest motoring exhibition that is the MPH Show here.

The legacy of this place continues and thus, its supporters hold a resourceful campaign and are calling a hold on the early deconstruction work that was about to start in November. This entire re-development plan is drafted by the Capco, the Developer Capital and Counties. Those who are against the deconstruction plan say that it’s all waste as a management plan. They propose that the entire process should be looked into more deeply as this re-development will lay great impact on the traffic flow and on the local streets as well.

The Earls Court Exhibition Centre overlaps the boundaries between the Royal Kensington and Chelsea and the boroughs of Hammersmith and Fulham. To the predictable reconstruction plan of the Capco regarding the exhibition centre will have to be approved by both the boroughs before the actual execution starts. They have raised a petition seeking a stay at the reconstruction orders.

The campaign that is more interested in saving Earls Court says that most of the project area falls under the boundaries of the H&F. A new administration is well engaged in a review of all the planning involved. According to the Kensington and Chelsea group if the project is haulted on the H&F side then it will not be possible to carry on with the re-development part on the other side of the border.

It is not the case that a reconstruction plan will always create winners, it sometimes even creates losers and no one can guarantee that. Similarly, in this case of re-development of the Earl Court exhibition centre it is not that easy to strike a balance with the best intensions of the boroughs.

Other than the local Tories, Capco and Bris Jonathan none is in the favor of the reconstruction plan proposed by Capco for the Earls Court. Since they hope to earn unlimited amount of money with the re-development of this Earls court project they are the only ones standing in its support. However, the opposition thinks more deeply and has more people on their side in the saving movement. The opposition includes the UK events industry, Tube unions, conversationalists, architects, small local businesses, Liberal Democrat, Green party politicians and labour are all want it to go off.

As far as Earls Court Exhibition Centre is concerned, it is one of the renowned attractions which is a must visit on everyone’s itinerary. Those staying in hotels near Earls Court can get the best out of it by exploring this centre multiple times. Its popularity lies so deeply in the hearts of people that majority is not saying a yes to its re-development plan. It is even known as a popular arena for hosting musical events with a seating capacity of around 19,000 people.

The discussion about its re-development was opened in the year 2010 and its demolition was opposed by the Earls Court Action Group. The group comprises of all parties that are against the demolition and the local residents as well. An ongoing petition is filed which is hosted by 38 degrees. It is not yet clear when the work of demolition will be executed.
